Mana Ake - Mental Health and Wellbeing Support for Children

Catherine Corcoran —

At Yaldhurst School Tōtara Tūkaha, we have access to mental health and wellbeing support for our children through an initiative called Mana Ake. If you are seeking support for your child please contact Catherine - catherine.corcoran@yaldhurst.school.nz

What

Mana Ake provides mental health and wellbeing support for children in primary school years 1-8 across Canterbury through their support workers who have diverse range of skills and include psychologists, social workers, counsellors, teachers and youth workers. (Flyer attached at the bottom of the article)

Why

Through their daily lives, many children experience issues that impact their wellbeing such as managing emotions, friendships and bullying, parental separation, and grief and loss. The impact of these issues can become visible through changes in behaviour at home or school, shared conversations, or even physical health symptoms, and the impact can also extend beyond the child themselves, across their whānau and friends.

At Yaldhurst

Theo Johnston-Maurenbrecher has been our key kaimahi for the past three years and is a familiar face around the school, usually on a Friday. He works with small groups and individuals, and time with him is highly prized by the children. Our children are often assigned to Theo, but we have also been supported by other experienced kaimahi.

Drop-In Sessions

Not sure what to do next? Theo is also available for a drop-in meeting on Fridays or accepts phone calls/emails from parents who want advice.

Teacher Referrals

Teachers can also ask for advice and make referrals to Mana Ake. If a teacher is concerned about a child's mental health or wellbeing, and believes a Mana Ake referral could help, their first step is always to consult parents and gain verbal consent to proceed.

What's next?

Once a referral is placed, the child is added to a waitlist. Once assigned/picked-up by a kaimahi, you will be contacted for a conversation that will lead to you giving informed consent if you agree to proceed.
