Principal News

Attendance at School

Last year, the Ministry of Education established attendance targets for schools as part of a wider strategy of raising achievement. Attendance at school can effect both progress and well-being for students, and the Government has set a target for raising achievement. The Stepped Attendance Response (STAR) is explained in the graphic below.

There is a clear connection between attending school regularly and doing well at school. If your child is going to be absent for any reason it is essential that you report this through the @school app every morning. The office team check that all children are accounted for and contact you if we were expecting them to be at school and they have not arrived.

We acknowledge that there are genuine reasons students may occasionally be absent. We appreciate that when children have been unwell, that you help keep everyone at school safe by keeping your children home until they have fully recovered.

If your child is going to be absent because of sickness or a medical appointment it is important that you let us know.

If your child is going to be absent for a non-medical reason, please advise us as soon as possible through the @school app or through the school website. It is important to remember that permission from the Principal is required before taking your children on holiday if the dates are in term time.

The content of the new Curriculum for Maths and English means that teachers will usually only cover the content once every year, so it may be that your child does miss parts of the Curriculum if they are away. The nature of teaching means that teachers are unable to provide work for your child while they are away.

Peer Mediators and the Wheel of Choice

This week, some of our Peer Mediators, pictured at the top of this newsletter, learned how to use the Wheel of Choice in the Junior and Senior playgrounds. While on duty, the Peer Mediators can now more confidently help students learn about different strategies that they can use to solve problems which may arise during lunch playtime.
