Funding mission by developing a bequest programme in your parish. by Mark Chamberlain

Have you considered how bequests can resource your mission?

Encouraging parishioners to make a bequest to your parish or the Diocese can enable new generations to hear the gospel!

Recently I was asked by a Vicar if I had any resources that would help them produce a 'Bequest Brochure.' As it happened, a number of years ago, I did produce this kind of a brochure. It enabled the Wardens and Vestry to gently remind parishioners of the tremendous benefit of leaving something in their wills for the church. A bequest is a wonderful gift of love that enables the ministry and mission of the church to continue.

Ben Truman at Opawa is currently developing a Bequest Programme - this is what he said;

During the significant repair and renovation of St Mark’s Opawa, I became particularity thankful for the faithfulness of parishioners in the past who had left a gift for the church in their will. As someone still newish to the parish, it was wonderful to hear the stories of the late parishioners whose generosity was allowing us to build. As we’ve celebrated the gifts of others, I’ve become acutely aware of our need to leave new gifts for the next generations of parishioners at Opawa.

Many community groups have developed very strong legacy programmes so why shouldn't the church also encourage our members to think about the next generation and bless them with a tangible gift?

A good brochure will include reasons why Christians should consider leaving a bequest to the church cast in visionary language, a list of the kinds of bequests that can be made, some examples of the legal clauses to discuss with an advisor, information about making a will and of course a contact email address and phone number.

I have included a PDF of the brochure I developed at St Barnabas Fendalton. Feel free to use this as a template for your own parish brochure. It has been checked by a lawyer and an accountant so the wording is correct and helpful.

I have also included a short video that our Diocesan Manager Edwin Boyce made on this topic which provides further information.
