Wiki Tuarua - Te Kura o Matuku Takotako
The gorgeous Year 0/1 tamariki have participated in a scavenger hunt around the school to find the significant places in their cultural narrative. The senior students were helping to give out tokens that they could stick on their sheet each time they found the significant place. They are now going to make connections to the Sumner area and how the names connect.
The Year 3& 4 team kickstarted their ANZH unit with a provocation/immersion day. The classes rotated around various engaging activities such as sketching, weaving, poi, tuku tuku, and tī rākau. These activities sparked curiosity and gave them a taster of the types of things they are then going to weave through their discovery programme throughout the term.
They have also been exploring timelines- starting with creating their own timeline since birth to help them understand the concepts. The next step is to piece together a timeline of significant historical events in Aotearoa. This will also be tied into maths as they sequence numbers and understand the concept of dates.
The team also have an exciting trip to Tūranga coming up, which I am looking forward to hearing about and sharing with you all later in the term. If you are interested in an excursion- check out the offerings at Tūranga, it sounds fantastic.
Year 5&6 have been exploring their mihis and representing these both visually and orally. They got whānau involved in this process by incorporating it into their home learning tasks. It was so obvious how proud they were as they were explaining all of the elements of their visual mihi to me. They knew why every element was there and could explain why it was significant. The craftsmanship and care was incredible!
The Year 7&8 space was buzzing with ākonga who were practising retelling of Kupe and Te Wheke. They had created visual sketchnote maps of the pūrakau and were using these to practise their retells. I was amazed by the kids ability to orally retell the story from start to finish and how much passion they put into it (actions and all!)
