PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Learner agency is becoming a large part of Bethlehem School.

Kia ora e te whānau,

Our final term of the year has gotten off to a great start! We have plenty of exciting events over the coming weeks with our School Disco, Book Character Day, Community Movie Night and heaps more.

Within school, our ākonga have been continuing with their focused approach to learning. As you may remember, earlier in the year, I shared with you our school's Strategic Plan. This document was created as a result of feedback from students, staff and community members.  A school's strategic plan provides a roadmap to achieve key goals for the coming years.

One of our strategic goals is around the development of learner agency. Learner agency is the ownership and control that learners have over their own learning. Students have a sense of agency when they can be active participants in their learning.

Already this year we have seen significant learner agency demonstrated in our school production from last term, Ko Wai Mātou. We had students involved in all areas of our show from creation of script to backstage management. We continue to see it growing amongst our students as I have been approached by ākonga who identify needs in our school.

We are about to have a new student initiative begin at school, Recycling Rescuers. This group of students is passionate about taking student's lunch rubbish and turning them into toys for other children. This group of students approached me with a proposal for their idea and now we meet for regular milestone meetings and they launched their new programme yesterday at our school assembly!

It is a genuine privilege to work alongside our ākonga and watch them develop into caring and contributing global citizens.

Noho ora mai
