Tuesday 2nd August was Aria, Shanelle, Amelia, Ivy, Karishma, Shefali, and Saloni’s first after-school golf lesson. The lesson started at 3:30 pm at the Howick golf club at Musick point and ended at 4:30 pm. When everyone got there, we were all given yellow golf caps. We were also given putters, then we were taught how to hold our putters correctly and how to make sure we had a good grip. Once everyone got the hang of it we paired up and started practicing swinging them. We did this by swinging the putters back and forth against a block of wood 10 times. The next thing we did was an exercise where each person got to pick a spot to stand and try to hit the five golf balls into the hula hoops. When a ball didn’t get into the hula hoop, we had to push the ball aside and do it after the others. Once we got all five balls into the hoop the golf teacher moved it further away from us. After that, we got cones to practice hitting the ball into a smaller goal. When we got it in the cone, we put the ball into the hula hoop. Next we learnt how to read the green. Reading the green is using hand signals to figure out the angle of the hole to know whether to hit the ball hard or soft. Everyone got a turn to hit a ball using their putters into the hole from every angle. The records for how many hits it took to get it in the hole were: 2, 1, 1, 2. The last exercise we did was trying to find out which color on the slope/golf ball slide (with colored dots) would make the ball roll directly into the hole. Shefali volunteered to be the first guinea pig to try and see which color would do the best. In the end, the second dark grey-colored dot made the ball fall into the hole. We felt that the first lesson helped a lot and was really good for beginner golfers. Everyone had a good time and we can’t wait for next week!
