The following students received a Gold Scholar Award at our recent academic assembly held on Tuesday 30 May. The award recognises the outstanding academic achievement of students who gained 90 (or more) Excellence credits at Level 1 and 80 (or more) Excellence credits at Levels 2 and 3. 

As I write this comment I am sitting in the newly refurbished Big Room. I am thrilled with this facility and how the boys are using it. The Big Room is serving fantastically as a meeting place, a senior study centre and also in providing temporary housing for our library. Library book issues have increased dramatically after moving and the experience that we have had with the Big Room reinforces the importance of providing quality facilities for the boys. Spaces like these do send a message that we value the boys learning and they are respecting the space in turn.

On 22 April, in the early hours of the morning, we left Christchurch for Auckland and then to Noumea. There were 12 students, Mr Cox, and our French teacher, Mr Mouhica. Many were nervous of travelling by themselves, and for some it was their first time overseas.

On the 27th of April, 2017, my mother, sister, the Head Girl from Te Whānau Tahi School and I had the privilege of travelling across the Pacific Ocean to participate and present at the Indigenous Thought Conference at Blue Quills University located near St. Paul in Alberta, Canada.   

On the 19th of May 2017, students from Christchurch Boys' and Christchurch Girls' High Schools participated in one of Christchurch's most highly anticipated dance competitions, the Stage Challenge Competition. 

A huge congratulations to golfer Tom Parker who has been selected to represent New Zealand at the 2017 Toyota Junior Golf World Cup at the Chukyo Golf Club in Japan next month.

Year 12 Dean and Physical Education Teacher, Gary McNaughton has recently been recognised by Cycling New Zealand at their annual awards evening.

The annual 1st XV rugby fixture between Christchurch Boys’ High School and Christ’s College took place last Thursday 1st June. The game was hosted at school for the second time since the new John Morrissey Grandstand has been completed.

At the behest of the Student Executive, boys and their parents are reminded about the school’s expectations with regards to their appearance at school. 

Tickets are now available for the Centenary Celebrations over Labour Weekend 2017.

You may recall an article earlier in the year about Alex Reilly, one of our Tear 11 boy's who is presently in the spinal unit at Burwood Hospital fighting Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS).

Christchurch Boys’ High School was very fortunate to host NZQA Chair, Sue Suckling on Wednesday evening. Approximately 150 people were in attendance for the presentation, which was held in the newly refurbished Big Room. It was great to see such a large turnout from the Boys’ High community, as well as Principals and teaching Staff from Christchurch Girls’, Burnside High, Cathedral Grammar and other schools from around the region.

On Friday, the 12th of May, Jake Bailey held his book launch, “What Cancer Taught Me”, in the Big Room at Christchurch Boys’ High School. 

Over the next few months we will publish some student writing. We hope you enjoy it.

Recent classes to complete the Year 10 Vocational Pathways Programme are PSL, MKB and ZRS. BTM, THB and WHL are currently in the process of working through it and will have completed their class work, interview and work-site visit by the end of the term.

The PTA were proud to support the launch of former Senior Monitor Jake Bailey’s autobiography “What Cancer Taught Me” at school on May 12.

The PTA are currently looking for Expressions of Interest to Manage the CBHS PTA Uniform Shop under a Contract for Services.

However being stuck with a fixable problem like a flat tyre is pretty simple for anyone to deal with once you know some handy tips that make the process easier.
