Student Agency, Wellbeing and Engagement Teacher Led Innovation Fund Project
The most important aspect of change is the development of agency and self-efficacy where our young people feel empowered to take responsibility and appropriate action to improve their own wellbeing and that of their community. We live in a society where our ownership of health and wellbeing is increasingly outsourced to others. How do we listen to our student voice and develop their agency to improve their own wellbeing and engagement and that of their community?
Our Aim is to answer the following Inquiry Questions:
How can we ensure students' voices about their wellbeing are heard?
How can we ensure students' views in relation to their wellbeing are included in decisions about learning and the curriculum?
How can we shift our current pedagogical practices to enable student agency in order to improve their wellbeing and enhance learning?
Project Team: Liz Beattie (St Joseph’s School, Papanui) Megan Martin (Marian College) Keri Campbell (St Thomas of Canterbury College) Lydia Sula (St Teresa’s School, Christchurch), Critical Friend - Dr Sarah Te One (Core Education)
Each teacher develops and implements wellbeing inquiries within their own school context during the duration of the project (2018-2020). This allows for an ongoing process of meeting, testing, analysing, collective sense making and action. They keep an ongoing digital journal of the full process (design, observations, data, reflections, video recordings, etc) which is used as evidence for change for checkpoint and summary reports.
