IntroductionThrough the Kahui Ako Mareta and Debbie (St. James) were able to take up an offer for some in-class science lessons with Dr. Dawson (Villa Maria). The children had one lesson a week for four weeks. In Week 5 at the culmination of this time, our classes (Years 3-6) had a 'Celebration of Learning’, where we invited our parents to come along and share in the learning with their children. The children from our classes discussed and organised what activities they would like to include and how they would set these up in the classrooms to show parents. They used a ‘hands-on’ approach and it was agreed to set up five stations: Bubbles, Fizzing, Smelling, Sherbet, and Popcorn.
These stations depicted the work that was done with Dr. Dawson. The Children were put into five groups and then planned what they needed to do to run their station. This included: materials/equipment, posters, table layout, questions to engage parents, and dividing up the knowledge they had learned, so each group member could say something about the work covered.
A format for the celebration was written with the help of the children:
● Each class to do an introduction to the parents
● Science Stations set up ‘hands-on approach’ parents to get engaged in the activities
● Displays set up of the work done in the classrooms for parents to view
● Speech of thanks to the parents for coming to the Celebration
● Presentation of thanks to Dr. Dawson from the children.
