Room 21: Get New Zealand Writing Poetry Activity

During Term One, Room 21 took part in this nationwide activity where 96,00 original poems were created and shared around 2990 classrooms across New Zealand.

Using 13 items as inspiration, we learnt to construct poems which used a range of vocabulary to communicate our ideas. Pupils enjoyed the freedom to play with interesting words and rhythm to create their final poems.

We were buddied with a Year 8 class at Somerville Intermediate in Auckland. This meant we received their poems, and they received ours. Both classes enjoyed the opportunity to read and share each others’ poems.

We are now taking this process one step further by becoming penpals with our buddy class. We are currently writing them an introduction letter and are looking forward to getting them in the post, and awaiting their replies.
