Mr Tucker calls time on his football coaching career

After 33 years, our Head of the Science Faculty, Mr Andrew Tucker, has come to the end of his run as an HBHS Football coach. One of the Senior Crimson team parents, Mrs Lee Slomp, reports on their season.

Senior Boys Crimson Football Team has had an awesome season - it is made up of a team of really good young guys who have individually and collectively displayed good humour, good heart, good perseverance, and good teamsmanship.  Mr Andrew Tucker has been a fostering coach who has supported and developed the tone of this team.  After the team's last game he said he is glad that these boys are who he is finishing his coaching career and influence with - he's had highly successful competitive teams, but this year he has enjoyed coaching a team that is out there enjoying the sport, the matesmanship and the jokes.  Mr Tucker has coached at HBHS for 33 years, got football going when it wasn't on offer when he taught at Tokoroa and coached for a further 3 years prior to that. He has therefore coached a minimum of at least 550 players. The players in HBHS Senior Crimson, 2021, are thankful to have had Mr Tucker coach them. They worked out how to distract him from pressing on the point of 'who is goalie this game' although there was always a happy volunteer. He was always an unbiased referee when there was no other option available, and the only time we looked like having a skirmish on the field was when Mr Tucker was away celebrating his birthday!

On behalf of all of the players who have been coached by Mr Tucker, we say thank you for your tireless efforts in helping us enjoy the beautiful game.  We wish you a happy, well-deserved and relaxing retirement.
