HBHS wins Waikato Secondary Schools Chess Championship

Once again HBHS hosted the Waikato interschools Chess Championship with junior and intermediate schools competing on Sunday morning and the secondary schools in the afternoon in Term 3. This year’s event attracted entries from ten secondary schools with HBHS entering both an A team (Michael Lin, Max Stephens, Nathanael Loy, and Ben Wright) and a B team (Sean Clark, Joel Crombie, Jovan Xin, and Daniel Loy) in the five round Swiss Tournament. Despite the very strong competition this year, HBHS A won the tournament with 9/10 (conceding only a draw against Hillcrest) and HBHS B came second with 8/10 (only losing to our A team). An excellent result! As a result of this win, HBHS has won the right to represent the Waikato in the National Championships to be held in Auckland in December.
