Hamilton Boys’ High School finishes first in the Waikato Premier Boys’ High School Lacrosse League

Despite the early finish to the 2021 Waikato Secondary Schools’ Lacrosse season, HBHS finished first in the Premier Boys’ competition and in third place in the Junior Boys’ competition.

With a second winter season cut short by COVID-19 and the suspension of the first New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Lacrosse tournament in early September, our team felt a great sense of disappointment like so many others. However, placings based on rankings going into the last couple of weeks of play, meant our Premier team managed to take first place and our Junior team third place.

The 2021 Lacrosse season was the first season our Premier boys team ventured outdoors to play what is known as field lacrosse - a variation of the game that is affected by the weather unlike indoor box lacrosse which had been played previously. Other teams in the Premier competition were Te Awamutu College and Cambridge High School.

As Lacrosse in the Waikato, and across New Zealand, continues to grow, we will keep developing the sport at HBHS. I would like to make special mention of the students who made representative teams for Waikato Lacrosse this year. Those boys who made the Under 15 team were Ben Johnson, Devon Ormsby, Edison Ormsby, Noah Van Tongeren and Jaykob Harris. In the Under 18 team there were the following, Kyle Parker, Max Mills, Ben Cowen, Scott Cathcart and James Harrison. Congratulations to you all.

A huge thank you to Lucas Thom, an Old Boy of HBHS, for coaching the teams and to parents for their support. We look forward to building towards next season and the NZSS Tournament in 2022.
