Rico Nelson attends the Steven Adams International Basketball Camp

We caught up with Rico, appropriately enough in Gym 1 playing basketball, on what he learned at the fourth annual Steven Adams International Basketball Camp held in the July school holidays.

During the July school holidays Year 13 student Rico Nelson headed south to Wellington along with other New Zealand secondary schools representative players to attend the Steven Adams International Basketball camp for four days.  Normally Adams is in attendance, but COVID restrictions meant that this year's intake had to meet him via Zoom.  That didn't stop him sharing valuable insights on his experiences within the NBA, being drafted and the work ethic required to succeed at the highest level.  Needless to say, a strong work ethic is absolutely essential.  This advice was echoed by Tall Ferns and U.S. college students Krystal and Charlisse Leger-Walker who shared their experiences in the U.S. college system, and provided advice on getting scholarships, what different college coaches are looking for, and how to manage your time and training.  Looking after your body and factoring in rest time is vital, as is learning how to deal with the inevitable homesickness that comes from being so far away from New Zealand.  The sisters impressed upon the players how important it was to have a positive attitude.  Different college coaches look for very different traits and talents, but having that good attitude and willingness to work is universal.

Next year Rico is looking to join the Franklin Bulls team based in Pukekohe, and in a few years will be casting his eyes overseas, possibly to Australia, to see what opportunities are out there. We thank him for sharing his experiences and wish him every success in his endeavours.  We are certain we will be seeing much more of him on the basketball court in the future.
