Student Achievements

John McGlashan College boys continue to show their strength across a number of sporting events.

Cross-Country

Congratulations to Oliver Chignell who recently finished fourth in the senior boys race at the national secondary schools cross country championships held at Gladfied Golf Course. He finished in a time of 20min 33sec and will now represent  New Zealand in the Australian cross country championships, which encompass the secondary schools event, in Melbourne in August. Ruaidhri Brosnan and Ben Mitchell also had excellent runs finishing 17th and 19th in the Year 9 and Junior events respectively. 

Basketball

Congratulations to the following boys who have made Otago representative basketball teams.

U/19 Squad: Luke Kirkness, Tom Sinclair, Sean Duff & Semisi Maiai
U/17A: Josh Stoddard
U/15A: Alex Byars, Will Edwards & Dominic Morrison (only in Y8)
U/15B: Josh Hope & Bruno Marsh

Football

Spencer Byers has been selected into the 2015 Milk Cup squad which will be held in Northern Ireland from Sunday 26th July - Friday 31st July.

Sport Stacking

William McLaughlan recently attended the  World Sport Stacking Championships in Montreal. He achieved four medals -  one 3rd placing and three 4ths.  William has also just come second overall in the 2015 NZ National Sport Stacking Championships held in Wellington last weekend

Table Tennis

The inaugural Otago Junior Open tournament was recently held at the Edgar Centre. The main objective of the event was to assist the Otago selectors gauge current form before finalising teams for the South Island teams tournament that was held in Christchurch over Queens Birthday weekend.

The U13 boys final was fought out by two John McGlashan College pupils. Jiacong Ruan showed his best ever tournament form to defeat Martin Page in a close final.  As a result of their excellent performances, both Jiacong and Martin were selected to represent Otago at the South Island teams tournament.

Following on from this success, Martin Page and Jiacong Ruan won the U13 division in table tennis doubles at the Canterbury Championsips and were 3rd in the South Island.

Clay Target Shooting

Shane Sanders recently achieved a perfect 100 straight badge at the Central Otago men's Championship Clay target shoot.

Golf

Kyle Clark had a win in the Otago Golf Club champs, he won the junior knockout competition for 14.2 handicap and over.

Rugby League

New Zealand Rugby League age group captain Rory Ferguson was named as one of three finalists for the ASB young sportsman award. Rory becomes the first finalist from his sport since the junior award was introduced.

Swimming

Ronald Poon was a runner up award in the TrustPower Community Volunteers award, for voluntary contributions to school and his community. Ronald was recognised for his time and effort given back to swimming, and the many ours spent poolside teaching others to swim and his general selfless attitude to helping other. 

Fencing

Louis Jennings has been selected to represent New Zealand in Foil and Epee in the Commonwealth Cadet and Junior Fencing Championships at Cape Town in July, 2015.  At Cadet level (u17), Louis is ranked 1st and 2nd in New Zealand for the Foil and the Epee respectively.

Boxing

Alex Hanan finished second in the N.Z. Boxing Championships.

Martial Arts

Riley and Keegan Hall recently went to the Canterbury/ Westland regional karate championships in Christchurch. The competition was fierce - Riley won Bronze in the boys 12/13 premier kata and Bronze in the boys 12/13 premier kumite. As part of a team with a boy (Max) from Christchurch they won the boys 10-13 team kumite event. 

Riley and Keegan will both be attending the Nationals in Wellington in the July school holidays.

Rugby Union

Arthur Burdon, Daine Lowery, Woody Kirkwood , Josh Timu and Luke Jarvie have been selected to attend the Highlanders Camp.
