NZSL Tutor Team Inspires, Innovates, and Transforms

Making connections through New Zealand Sign Language.

Our tutors work with a range of NZSL@School students from Stewart Island to Kaitaia in the far north.  Tutors work 1:1 with their students, classes, Communication Education Support Workers (C/ESWs) and Resource Teachers of the Deaf (RTDs), totalling over 800 people.  Some of these lessons are face-to-face, others via Zoom.

Some of the key highlights for 2023 were:

  • A tutor guiding a student on practical preparation for obtaining their driver license. The tutor explained all the vocabulary and language around the theory part. This student achieved their learner licence!
  • Another tutor worked with a student around horse riding – learning all the NZSL vocabulary linked with this. This student can now ride a horse confidently!
  • Tutors have also collaborated on a unique Keep in Touch (KIT) Day, dedicated to celebrating Deaf Heroes. The tutors were role models, and it was great to see students learning about the variety of jobs Deaf people worldwide can do.
  • A tutor worked on a unique language day for friendship, learning and immersion in Deaf culture. These students come together fortnightly to learn NZSL from a tutor.
  • Our students have learned the different signs for the Matariki stars and why we celebrate Matariki.

Thanks to the tutors, we have had some new students who are learning NZSL for the first time and are making significant progress in their NZSL language learning.
