The Christchurch mosque shootings of 15 March 2019 were a heart-breaking moment in Aotearoa New Zealand's history. So we begin by acknowledging the dead, in particular the fifty-one victims of this horrific attack.

Professor Ian Breward, in a seminal article in 1979 concluded that, “There is a great deal of mapping to do in order to establish the major trends and landmarks in the history of religion in New Zealand.”[1]

This article explores ways in which secular ideals and commercial imperatives have conspired to lead to the emergence of new suburbs in New Zealand where, for the first time in nearly two centuries, churches do not feature in the built environment.

It is my understanding that the Scriptures and orthodox theology teach us that we live in a bent world that is “charged with the grandeur of God…” over which the Holy Ghost “broods with warm breast and with ah! bright wings.”[1]

We are bequeathed economies that are pre-programmed for economic growth and “we are living through the social and ecological fallout of that inheritance.”[1]

Both of my children went through mindfulness exercises as part of an approved New Zealand Ministry of Education school curriculum; and both thought the mindfulness exercises were slightly “off” in some way.
