Senior O'MAthalon by Janine Hills

OMAthalon

Term Three saw the return of the Otago Regional OMAthalon Competition.

The concentration and frustration on the faces of the competitors was evident throughout the competition.

The Senior Competition was held on Thursday 17th August at Logan Park High School, with the grand quiz master John Major once again writing the questions for this competition. Students had 8 rounds of questions, which were based around general mathematics knowledge, problem solving, mathematical history, famous mathematicians, along with mixed level curriculum questions and past Jnr OMAthalon style questions. Each team was able to nominate two sections in which they could earn double points.

Logan Park had five teams that rose to the challenge:

Raw Overcooked en Passant: David Zeng, Naoki Kozakai, Alexander Sun and Aubrey Alsop-Mackie

Claim the Duke!: Nathan Mutch, Charlie Bauchop and Micah Duckles

We Have No Idea: Finlay McGilchrist and Radhi Rahman

Sweeter than 3.14: Bianca Van der Haegen, Caitlyn Smith, Charlie Cracknell and Jenny Reid

J L: Marco Farella, Miseki Honjo and Lilyan Son

It was a close competition which saw the Raw Overcooked en Passant; David, Naoki, Alexander and Aubrey, taking out first place in the last round of the competition.

The Junior Competition was held on Thursday 24th August at the Edgar Centre FM Arena. Each team in the junior competition had a nominated runner who would race each attempt at a question to their marker and then run back to their desk. Results were close in a number of the competitions with only 1 or 2 points deciding placings.

Year 9:

It was high stakes in the Year 9 competition, with the Logan Park B team tying for one of the top three places. The tie-break could be likened to a penalty shoot out at the Football World Cup, with each of the top three teams one-by-one bringing the questions up to their corresponding marker and one-by-one the runners were sent back to their team to work out the correct answer. After a nail biting few minutes, and the teachers from each school sitting on the edge of their seats, with nerves wrecked! Otago Boys took out 1st place, with Kings taking 2nd and a well fought 3rd to Logan Park.

Logan Park A: Samuel Huang, Zihan Fu, Kaia Adamson and Neve Russell (14th place)

Logan Park B: Felipe Green-Santos, Jack Swainson, Lee Shotter and Zac Dyson (3rd place)

Logan Park C: Finn Curtis, Amos Clarke, Elaine Li and Monty McGee (22nd place)

Logan Park D:Karuna Yang, Bodhi Boroughf, Beatrice Milne and Maeve O’Brien (30th place)

Year 10:

After a nail biting Year 9 competition the Year 10s were raring to go. Teams were given a pep talk and told that their teachers could not handle another tie breaker. But as the competition neared an end, it was evident that there was going to be yet another tie breaker. Logan Park C was tied for 1st with John McGlashlan. Again the stakes were high with the quickest team to answer the question and get the correct answer back to the marker awarded 1st place. A gallant effort by Logan Park C saw them pip John McGlashan, to be awarded 1st.

Logan Park A: Ayako Aoyagi, Lucy Riepl, Ava van Asten and Charlotte Cane (5th place)

Logan Park B: Ken Nguyen, James Fleming, Fergus Macdiarmid and Max Bryant (6th place)

Logan Park C: Dominic Mein, Odin Hyink, Jordan Turner and Ottis Watters (1st place)

Congratulations to all of our competitors.
