Recycling Bins by Heike Cebulla-Elder

Enviro-group update

The first six weeks of Term Three were a busy time for the Enviro-group. We organised two group competitions in that time - here are the results of those:

The first one was to measure how our school whanau comes to school and how many of us use active transport to commute from and to school. With an overall rate of about 65% of our whanau coming by car, the Enviro group is keen to increase the number of students coming either by bus, bike, on foot or any other way that uses an active mode of transport. The group competition was won by Clayton and Omimi was in second place. Coming into spring now might invite a move towards active transport and one way could also be to get dropped off at the stadium rather than driving all the way to the school grounds.

Our second competition was linked to Conservation week (14th to 19th of August) and we organised a litterblitz to clean up our school grounds - many thanks to all students who got involved - and this was won by Clayton (again) followed by Toroa. Let’s keep the grounds as clean as possible - this links to the brand new introduction of our first three tiered bin - opposite the canteen - where everyone can separate their rubbish into recyclables, compost and landfill waste. Please use these properly - so we can avoid contamination - more of these will be installed around school to reduce what we put into the landfill.
