EVolocity Regional Competition - Taylor Abbot by Supplied

'Taylor'-made 'sonic boom' design wins first prize at EVolocity

Year 13 student Taylor Abbot used a collection of recycled components to create a collapsible electric bike reaching 39km/hr on race day - well done Taylor!

What: EVolocity Regional Competition. Evolocity is a Charitable company which encourages the uptake of electric vehicles and promotes the skills and understandings in career related to engineering, sustainability and transport technologies to school students throughout New Zealand.

Where: Kartsport Nelson

Who: Taylor Abbot (Y13, Level Three Hard Materials Technology)

Why: At the end of each year school teams from across the Nelson region compete in events that test the design and construction of their electric vehicles. This year Motueka High School, Nelson Intermediate and Nayland College entered the competition at Kartsport, Nelson. The track events included; a Drag Race over 60m, negotiation of a Gymkhana challenge and an Economy Run.

Taylor came away with 1st prize in the open class two-wheel vehicle design with his ‘sonic boom’ 1000 Watt, 48 Volt collapsible design. Built from a mixture of recycled bicycle parts, an old bed frame and components sourced from Ali Xpress, Taylor spent many lunchtimes working on his design with Mr. Roughan. On race day Taylor reached a max speed of 39km/hr before snapping his chain. He has since been accepted into the NZ Airforce at Woodbourne where he will be studying to be an aircraft avionics technician or a systems technician.

For aspiring Technology students, 2022 promises to be an exciting year as Evolocity is creating a new 3 kilowatt class, with speeds in excess of 60-70km/hr. See Mr. Jones for further details.
