Nayland alumni Hanna Van der Giessen was recently announced as one of the recipients of the University of Otago 20Twenties Young Alumni Awards in recognition of bridging the gap between Artificial Intelligence and the medical world.

Year 11 student Astrid Sayer has been recruited to contribute to a review of school based health services. Today we learn more about the journey and Astrid's hopeful expectation to see positive improvements for young people across Aotearoa.

Last week representatives of the various Level 2 Business Studies groups collectively made a significant donation to the staff at Women's Refuge.

Nayland College’s active and talented debating scene has done it again with it’s participation (and subsequent achievements) in the NZ Schools Debating Impromptu Cup. Seven students competed in this fun, fast-paced online competition. Student Journalist Finn Kerby-Pinguet reports.

Throughout the year we have been profiling our new teaching staff and today we get to know a little bit more about our newest Deputy Principal and English teacher, Rowan Taigel.

Last month a group of Nayland College students competed against six other teams and in the midst of civil defense sirens going off, they won the competition! Well done Ollie Gabites, Silas Bailey, Tara McLarin, Noah Leighton and Emmogen Brown! Thora Moffatt was unfortunately sick on the night but is a very valued member of the team!

Last month five Nayland College students competed in the Nelson Regional Tournament held at St Joseph's School. The team came second, qualifying to take part in the nationals which were to take place next month. Well done to Sam Clark, Idris Remnant, Ronin Day, Max Lang and Charlie Hamley!

Before lockdown, student journalist Ysabella Abel interviewed student leader Brodie Seelen about his role as a leader within the school and his future hopes and plans. During lockdown we heard the fantastic news that he has been named the Ironman NZ 2022 recipient of the Tony Jackson Scholarship. Congratulations Brodie!

Microsoft has once again recognised Nayland College as a Showcase School, an elite group of schools that exemplify the best of teaching and learning in the world today.

The Nayland College Journalism Club is looking to profile some of the groups and organizations around the school, highlighting all the opportunities available at our school. Our first move in this purpose is to profile ourselves, in what can only be described as a slow descent into madness. Student Journalist Finn Kerby-Pinguet reports.

At the start of this term a number of our level 1 and level 2 music students had the amazing opportunity to have their original compositions played by professional musicians at a compositional workshop.

A group of very talented and creative students spent a lot of lockdown last year diligently working on embroidery projects to enter into a national competition. Year 9 students Ellie Beever, Serena Stanton Clark and Millie MacBrayne all did exceptionally well in the competition with Ellie taking first place for her piece 'There's no place like home.'

Last week saw our Y9 Institute of Sport class have their three-day high-performance camp here in Nelson.

Students taking Grow Your Own Business and/or Animal Behaviour and Welfare junior modules have welcomed the addition of some very cute and fluffy day-old chicks to add to their practical, hands-on learning. Many other students have also loved getting the chance to visit the little chicks.

Many students are involved in this year’s exciting production of 'Carousel.' The whole school is aware of our talented cast getting ready to perform. Yet with the show getting closer to performance, our backstage crews are also preparing intensely. Student Journalist Finn Kerby-Pinguet reports.
