Nayland Journalism reports on its own rapport

The Nayland College Journalism Club is looking to profile some of the groups and organizations around the school, highlighting all the opportunities available at our school. Our first move in this purpose is to profile ourselves, in what can only be described as a slow descent into madness. Student Journalist Finn Kerby-Pinguet reports.

Meeting every Monday at lunch, the Student Journalism Club is a group of students who actively report for and contribute to the newsletter. It’s members are a handful of students involved in the Nayland writing scene, looking to hone their reporting skills, showcase the events around school, and get their name in (metaphorical) print. The club, however, is not limited to just the newsletter and there is room for growth. Students can be supported if they have a vision or an idea to create something, whether that be podcasts, films or otherwise. If students have a passion for a certain media or area that they believe could use some investigative reporting, they are welcome to come along as the club is looking to expand its reach.

Ysabella Abel states “We aim to celebrate the success of all students.” This highlights the importance of students writing and reporting on the achievements of their peers. When student voices are the ones telling the important stories around Nayland it is much more impactful than if staff and teachers were the only source of news at the school. The group aims to tell the news in a way that students want to hear it, to have the most impact and reach as a school reporting group.

With the club being facilitated by Ms. Taigel and Ms. Luton, students are encouraged and supported to write on topics they are interested in. Meetings are weekly in the boardroom at Monday lunchtime for anybody who wants to get involved, whether that is reporting or media creation in an area you’re passionate about.
