Check out what Hub 2 has been up to this week.

What a start to the week we had with Hub 2 presenting the whole school assembly via Zoom. We are so proud of all the students that spoke, shared their learning and supported their peers. It can be scary and nerve racking speaking at assembly but doing it on a digital platform is becoming the new normal as our assemblies next term we'll all be via Zoom when the hall is being upgraded.

Reading

In Mrs King's Reading class we have welcomed two more reading groups to our chapter chat sessions. This week we began the first 9 chapters of ‘The Twits” by Roald Dahl. The students have been exploring the first 9 chapters of The Twits. This has made us laugh and cringe at the same time as we listen to a relationship that is horrid as Mr and Mrs Twit try to out trick each other through eating worms in spaghetti, hiding a frog in the bed and pretending Mrs Twit had ‘the shrinks’. We have been exploring new vocabulary this week through using the dictionary to understand the meaning and write character descriptions. It has been great to see students bringing in their own copies to read along with us each day.

In Miss Doig and Mrs Griffiths's groups, the children have been continuing to work on managing themselves and making sure they get their weekly activities done. They are continuing to work hard on sounding out the words they are reading during their reading sessions.

Writing

In our Writing this week we completed the ‘Walking Rainbow’ experiment. Check out some of our stories-

Me and my friends did a experiment. The water went into the cup. Then the food colouring went into the cup. The napkin soaked up the colour. Then the napkin looked like different rainbows.

We did a magical experiment. First Miss Doig got a cup and she put some food colouring in a cup. The Miss Doig put some water in a cup. Next the food colouring and the water walked up the tissue paper. It was amazing.

A magical experiment happened yesterday!! The ingredients were food colouring, a plastic cup and a napkin. First we filled the plastic cup to half way. Then we poured food colouring into the cup. Then we put a napkin between both cups. It was like magic the food colouring slowly walked up the napkin it was so cool!!

Now I want to tell you that this experiment blew my mind and I was so excited to do it! For this experiment we used drinking water, a cup, food colouring, 5 paper towels. First we got 6 cups and put food colouring in them. Then we put a paper towels in the cup and the food colouring walked up the paper towel and made it coloured. It was incredible I had never seen anything like that.

We did a experiment. First we need a cup and a paper towel and food colouring. Next we put the food colouring in the cup. We put the paper towel on top off the cup. Then the paper towel sucked the food colouring. The paper towel changed colour then the paper towel turned into a rainbow.

A magical experiment happened! We had food colouring, napkins and a cup. We first put food colouring in the cups. Then we put napkins in each cup and put into the next cup. The napkins absorbed the food colouring. It tiptoed up the napkin and it mixed with the other side. It turned into a different colour in the middle.

Maths

In Maths, we are beginning our time unit. In Mrs King’s class we have been looking at the days of the week, the year and sequencing our birthdays in order. We are beginning to look at sequencing events within a school day and a normal day from when we wake up to when we go to sleep. In Mrs Griffith’s class they have been exploring what happens within a school day and the times different learning occurs. They have been exploring stopwatches and hour glasses, investigating how long it takes the sand to move down. As a class they discussed how they can measure time, the students came up with seconds, minutes and hours. In Miss Doig’s class they have been looking at the events within a day and the days of the week. They made loops to show their understanding of the order of the days of the week. They are beginning to explore telling the time using paper watches.

Integrated Topic

For Integrated Topic, we have been continuing to plan our new learning space. The students are drawing a plan of what furniture they would like to take into the learning space and how they would like it placed. This will help us plan where we put the furniture when we move over the holidays, using student voice to guide our decision making. Once the students have drawn their design they are going to have the opportunity to build it using cardboard, paper, lego, and 3D drawing. If you have any clean milk lids, cardboard or boxes please feel free to send them our way next week to help with the construction of our new spaces.

Te Reo Maori

Maori this week we joined hub 3 once again and practised our karakia that we are getting better at and our role in a Mihi Whakatau which is a welcoming ceremony for new students and staff. Students showed respect and tried their best to remember the karakia and waiata. Ka Pai!
