Wow it is hard to believe we are already at the end of week 7, this term is whizzing along.
On Monday, we hosted the Kakano Assembly. It was so great to see the student’s wanting to take on the responsibility of leading an assembly and sharing their learning with their peers. We are so proud of the students that got up and spoke with confidence. Findlay and Charlotte gave the Kakano students a great demonstration of the importance of washing your hands rather than just using sanitiser when they are dirty. The junior choir showcased the ‘Dot Song’ and their performance was outstanding.
On Tuesday, we had the opportunity to get out and work together with students in year 4 and 6 as we participated in Top Team. This was a great event that developed our fitness skills, coordination, teamwork and participation. The students rotated around a range of activities every 10 minutes and were able to score points as they completed tasks together such as noughts and crosses, jigsaws, jenga, and filling a bucket with a sponge. While the weather was against us it was great to see the students getting in and having a go.
In Reading, students have been reading a range of different books, decoding words with their teacher and developing their comprehension skills to remember and understand what they have read. Depending on what level your child is reading at they will have a new book each day or a book over a couple of days. If your child is looking for extra books to read, they are welcome to read a book or chapter book from home. We want to develop a passion for reading and develop reading mileage in all children.
In Mathematics the students are working on developing their strategies using materials, counting on, whiteboards and a range of learning activities. In Mrs King's class we are working on solving addition and subtraction equations in our head. The students have been working hard to develop this strategy, hiding materials under card and counting in the air or putting their fingers behind their back and trying to count without seeing.
In the Arts rotation this week-
Miss Doig's class has been continuing to work on their dance moves. Each student contributed their own dance move into a whole class dance. They are really moving and grooving each week!
Mrs King's class finalised which character they would be playing whether it was the stick pig, the straw pig, the brick pig or the big bad wolf. The students then coloured in their masks that will help them get more into their character as they practise their lines and add actions.
Mrs Griffith's class experimented with crayon colours as they coloured in their love hearts. When the love heart was all coloured in the students were able to select a dye colour and see what happened when they put dye over their crayon.
In Te Reo Maori we have been learning our mihi. The students were each given a copy of the year 2 mihi in their CARE books. We went through each line, practising how to say it together. The students then spent time working with a buddy, practising saying their mihi and helping their buddy with theirs. Students then had an opportunity to share their mihi with their pastoral care class. It was so impressive seeing students take this opportunity and have a go with support.
In Integrated Topic we are continuing to explore our emotions such as happy, sad, kai pai, tired or worried. We have been talking about our emotions and how we feel in different situations such as when we play with our friends, what to do when we are sad and talking about what is making us worried.
Mrs Griffiths and Miss Doigs had the opportunity to go and see Life Education on Friday. This was an exciting trip, going inside the caravan and meeting Harold. The students looked at the body and what it needs such as water, blood. They then had the caravan shaking as they danced to a banana song. In the next lesson they will continue to look at what makes them happy, excited and sad.
Mrs King’s class will be going on Tuesday and Friday for their two lessons. Miss Doig and Mrs Griffiths will have their second visit on Tuesday.
