Alex HORN

A look back at the first week of the third term.

Welcome Bianca

Welcome Bianca to Oaklands School and the Year 2 Blue Hub, we are excited to have you joining us!

Reading

We have had a shift around in reading groups since the end of term testing last term.

Those children reading at purple and above are able to issue chapter books from the school library.

In Mr Morehu's reading class we are having a focus on comprehension with a bunch of new activities that challenge us to understand and respond to what we are reading about.

In Mr Horn's reading class we have begun Digital SMLs, a Google Slide based record of our self managed learning. This will help us develop our self management skills, our ICT skills, it will allow for deeper and more evidence driven reflection and feedback, and over time will become very specific to the needs of the individual.

Writing

We are using our science focus this term to fuel our writing. Each Monday's hook will be having a science experiment angle to it.

In Miss O'Loughlin's writing class they made a lava lamp our of water, oil, and some special ingrediants.

In Mr Morehu's class we learned about chemical reactions with Elephant's Toothpaste.

In Mr Horn's class we grew crystals in hot water with borax and pipe cleaners.

Maths

Well done to Peyton and Shubh for earning their Maths Whizz certificate for this week.

We also had the certificates for the Term 2 review handed out. Each child who maintained 3 or more progressions each week for the whole term earned one of these.

In Mr Horn's maths class we have been balancing equations using tidy numbers, adding and subtracting using place value, learning about times tables and solving word problems. We also had a challenge... Have a look in the images below and find the triangles pictures, how many triangles can you see in that picture?

Topic

As part of our science and technology topic this term we designed and carried out a scientific investigation based around the question "Where does ice melt the fastest?"

We had to come up with an experiment to test this and a hypothesis about what we thought would happen before we conducted the experiment.

PE

It's Mr Horn's favourite PE subject for the whole year! Gymnastics!

In gymnastics we will be learning about making body shapes, jumping on and off, rolling in a variety of ways, and building a sequence of movements by joining those things together.

This week we started by learning about the body shapes; stretch, straddle, pike, and tuck.

We also learned about the pencil and dish roll.

The Arts

We have started our next rotation of The Arts.

2AH are learning about dance with Miss Pickering

2PM are doing music with Miss Van Gledar

2JO are learning about pencil sketching in art with Mr Morehu
