Reading
Mrs King's reading class has been working on the middle part of the book Slime. We have been discussing new words such as pennies, astride, forbade, revenge. Each day the students have different questions to answer, developing their comprehension based on what we have read. This is a skill we will continue to develop as we have to listen to the story as it is being read, try and remember what has happened and then understand its main ideas and themes. We have had lots of laughs this week as we see how Ned is seeking revenge on the adults in the Isle of Mulch who have made the children’s lives miserable.
During Reading, Miss Doig's and Mrs Griffith's class have been continuing our reading rotations. The students continue to be engaged in the reading rotations. We have independent reading, listening using Epic, Handwriting, Teacher, Reading Games and follow up activities which work on key skills we focus on during our guided reading session.
It has been great to see so many students working towards their 50,100 and 150 night bookmarks for Reading. Seeing students complete their reading logs in their CARE books by adding the book they have reread from their guided session.
Maths
In Maths, we are continuing to explore number knowledge and strategies. Knowledge is about what the students know about numbers e.g. the numbers before and after a number. Strategies are the way students solve problems given to them this could be adding 10s counting on, solving the problems in their head via imaging. We aim to have the students being able to tell us what strategies they have used and how they have solved problems. Some students are able to solve problems but are unable to tell us how. Maths-Whizz is a supplement to our maths programme and doesn't give an accurate measure of where the students are working.
Writing
In Writing, this week we have continued with our science experiments. We made rain clouds using water, food colouring and shaving cream. We watched the rain (food colouring) break through the clouds (shaving cream) to make the water change colour. We have been so impressed with the students as they are gaining confidence to have a go at new words, add WOW words to make our stories capture the reader's attention and add detail to explain what we saw and how it happened. Here are some of our stories -
Yesterday we did a experiment. We put shaving cream in a cup and we put water in a cup and we put food colouring on the shaving cream. Mix to red and it was cool.

Physical Education
In Physical Education, we have been preparing for the cross country. The students are working on developing their skills to run for longer periods of time rather than rushing at the beginning and running out of puff at the end. Mrs Griffith’s took groups to practice their skipping with the skipping ropes. The students got to jump over the skipping rope, this is hard keeping in time with the skipping rope. We will continue to practice these skills and work on jumping forwards and backwards.
Inquiry
This term we are looking at the new space we will be moving into in Term 4. This is an opportunity for the students to be involved in how the space will look and what we would like to include not only within the classroom space but also the outside area.
Mrs Griffith’s will be looking at the gardens as she teaches the students about different plants and how they grow. They will look at animals (bees and birds) that visit the area and how they can help our gardens grow.
Miss Doig will be looking at recycling, which systems we can use and how Hub 2 can do their part to be sustainable within the school. Next year we will be working towards being a rubbish free school. After COVID the rules on what can and can’t be recycled changed, it is the job of the students to educate their peers on what they can and can’t recycle to ensure our recycling doesn’t end up at landfill.
Mrs King will be looking at designing an orchard. We will be exploring different trees that grow fruit, working out what we like and don’t like, what grows well and what we shouldn’t include and making a plan for how we could have an orchard. This will enable us to grow our own fruit that will fill our tummies for years to come.
Our inquiry’s will begin this term and continue into next term as we move into our space and begin to put our ideas into action. This is an exciting opportunity for the students to be part of the rebuild and shaping their own learning.
