Cultural capability -Teacher only day

Principal Okains Bay School - April 26, 2023

On Monday 24 April kura from Banks Peninsula gathered to learn about significant events that shaped out history.

Takapunake - the place where Captain Stewart and the brig Elizabeth moored to trade with the local Ngai Tahu. Little did the villagers know but onboard Captain Stewart's boat were Te Rauparaha and his warriors. The villagers on shore were killed and Tamaiharanui, his wife and daughter were captured and taken to Kapiti. Undescribable things happened to them.

Sam Hampton is a University lecturer and whakapapa's to Okains Bay. He is a geologist and an incredible scientist. He gave our kaiako a great understanding of the peninsula from a geological point of view and described some of the natural features that kaiako can use in their teaching and learning.

Jess Rogers took kaiako on a tour of Onawe. Undescribeable things happened at this pa site when it was "sacked" by Te Rauparaha.

The teacher only day was siginifcant in that staffs from all of the kura could come together and hear first hand from "experts"  a slice of our history on Banks Peninsula.
