Wildlife art
Our Veterinary Nursing department is home to the Wildlife Hospital, Dunedin. This is the only facility of its kind, in the South Island of New Zealand, home to some of the world’s most unique and most threatened species. The hospital treats a wide variety of animals, including native birds, penguins, seals, and sea lions. The hospital is crucial for the survival of many of these creatures.
Marion Wassenaar, one of our Lecturers in the Dunedin School of Art, approached art graduate Madison Kelly late last year about a possible collaboration to help raise funds for the Wildlife Hospital. She knew that Madison shared her love of animals and interest in wildlife preservation.
They started with an initial test to see how Madison's drawing would translate through Marion's screenprinting. Madison then did more drawings using different materials and Marion did some prints with double exposures to see different results. Madison visited the Wildlife Hospital, an aviary, a penguin recovery centre, and the Orokonui Ecosanctuary before completing a set of six original drawings of wildlife. Marion is producing screenprints of each of the six drawings.
Marion and Madison are donating a limited edition of 12 sets of six prints to the Wildlife Hospital Trust to sell as a fundraiser. From 28 September 2018 single prints will be available at $250 each and a set of six at $1200. If you are interested in purchasing please contact us.
