Cellphone Policy

Student Scope - Issue Four

Welcome back to Student Scope and to Term 2!

With a new term comes new learning, but that’s not the only thing that’s different in Term 2, as our 'Phones Away For The Day' policy is being put into practise.

The government made a new law that students are not allowed to use their phones at school unless for learning purposes. I conducted some interviews to get an idea of how this policy is going. While the responses were varied, there was a consensus on some questions asked.

Here’s a summary of the interview findings:

  • Students appreciate the rule during class because they understand that their phones can be a distraction, but they feel they should be allowed to use it at break time.
  • A few students mentioned they miss listening to music in class because it helps them to learn.
  • About half of the interviewees feel like having their phone is a right rather than a privilege and that they should be free to text their parents in the case of an emergency because it is faster and more convenient than going through student services.
  • Students feel like the policy will improve the school environment because people will talk face to face more and be connected.
  • All of the students interviewed said that they won’t struggle with the change, but feel like other students will still try to use their phones.

Thanks to everyone who took part in the interviews, it was really interesting to hear some student’s perspectives. While the new policy may not be everyone’s favourite part of Term 2, I think we can all agree that putting our phones aside for the school day will help us to become more focused learners with better social skills.
