Hoops for Hope

Puna Wānanga

This week we would like to highlight two Project Groups.

Hoops for Hope is a group of ākonga/learners who are hosting a 24hour Basketball Shooting event. It will involve 48 high school tauira/students who will get sponsored to shoot free throws for 30min each.

Our reason for choosing free throws is we believe in the health enhancing interconnection of physical health on mental health. Free throws are also completed in isolation and are considered the easiest shot in basketball ... or are they? A missed free throw can win or lose a game, yet many players don’t work hard enough to improve them. The same can be said for our mental health and teens. Sadly social isolation can also increase our risk of experiencing mental health issues such as depression, social anxiety and low self-esteem. Feeling socially isolated occurs when the young are not connected into their communities in a meaningful way.

Money raised at the event will be donated to I AM HOPE who aim to promote positive attitudinal societal change around mental health throughout New Zealand, and fund private care and counselling for young people stuck-in-the-mud on waiting lists. We offer hope and a voice to young people in our country through various projects including school tours, practical courses such as a barber and barista course, allowing people to share their own journeys through our podcast series 'HopeCast' and much more.

If you are interested in supporting this event, you can do so by either sponsoring a shooter or providing prizes. You can go to our givealittlepage or email phillipaburgess@rhs.school.nz for further information.

Wanderful Balance - RHS has entered an awesome agreement with Cafe Inc.! Cafe Inc. are sponsoring our sporting programmes at RHS but are also supporting our school with many other great initiatives!

The Puna Wānanga curriculum is coming to life with this agreement as our amazing student project group called Wanderful Balance have linked up with Cafe Inc. The group has worked with Cafe Inc. to design some delicious 'pre and post game' smoothies to support our student athletes to improve energy and recovery. This is now officially on the menu to be sold as RHS smoothies and for every smoothie that is purchased, the school receives a cashback contribution from Cafe Inc.! How cool is this? Awesome job Project Wanderful.

Our Hoops for Hope project group are also being supported by the cafe and will be provided with these smoothies and breakfast to help them get through their 24 hour event.

Every student and staff member who goes to Cafe Inc. is entitled to a 10% discount on all food and drink. Please note that you must have a student ID card or staff badge to be eligible for this.

We would like to thank Cafe Inc. for their support to our community and we really appreciate the variety of options that have become available through the agreement to support every student within our school.
