KORERO FROM MEG

Kia Ora

It is that time of year when we are heading toward the end of learning experiences and that students will be working towards final assessments. In light of the disruptive year for our young people, we are working hard to ensure they have every opportunity available to them to be successful in 2020. We have a particularly strong focus on our Year 13 cohort who will be leaving us at the end of the year. As always, our approach for academic success is tempered with a clear focus on wellbeing.

In Term 4, we will be making some minor adjustments to our learning schedule to provide further support for students to gain success in NCEA. Our next newsletter will have more detail. The changes will only be minor and will be focused on supporting NCEA success.

In addition to the support offered at school, it is critical that students understand the importance of using their time wisely. This will not come as a surprise, however, any support is appreciated. Students are reviewing and preparing for these assessments and this is a task that is completed both at school and at home. If they are feeling overwhelmed or that they need additional support from their teachers, we encourage you to support them to communicate their needs to their teachers. In this way, we will be able to support them along the way.

As a guide it is not unreasonable for students to be working at home for 3-4 hours per week. We know that many students have a lot of commitments with part time work and sports or cultural activities and we encourage them to continue to engage in this space. We encourage students to be mindful of priorities and keeping up with their studies, as this is a crucial time for their learning and should remain a high focus when they are at a senior level.

It is also that time of year when we like to be looking forward, planning and making decisions for the new year. As part of this process, we continue to review and refine our systems so that they are providing the best outcomes for students. We have been holding comprehensive focus groups with students and staff to stay connected to their learning experiences. Over the next few weeks there will be opportunity for feedback to further understand your child’s learning experiences.

We appreciate your ongoing support and are grateful for our students. As always, achievement will come with dedication and hard work but not at the expense of well rounded and happy individuals. Do the mahi get the treats.
