Frazer Tam receives Altrusa Youth Award

This year’s recipient for the Altrusa Youth Award from St Paul’s was Frazer Tam. The award recognises year 12 students across Hamilton high schools who excel in all areas of school life and are a role model for their peers.

Frazer was nominated for the award for his contribution to all four cornerstones of St Paul’s – academic, sport, culture and service.

“Frazer epitomises the criteria of Altrusa Youth Award. He is a caring, mature, motivated and diversely talented young man,” says St Paul’s Associate Headmaster, Ainsley Robson.

Frazer’s commitment to service is impressive. In 2019 and 2020, he was involved in the school’s service programme Over the Fence Ministry, where he spends lunchtimes with Fairfield Primary Students, reading stories, playing games and helping them with their maths.

In 2019 Frazer co-led the Year 11 Service Programme, where he spent up to three hours a week at the Refugee Orientation Centre, assisting refugee children with their education. During the lockdown levels 3 and 4, he volunteered at Redicare Medical Centre, and now Dinsdale Medical Centre, sending people their COVID-19 results.

Frazer boasts impressive sporting and cultural talents. He is a member of the school’s senior debating team, taking that further to become qualified as an adjudicator for the external junior competition. He is a member of the school choir, school chess team and has played ice hockey. However, it is in inline hockey that Frazer has truly excelled. Over the last six years, his efforts have seen him selected into the New Zealand U16, U18 and junior men squads, the latter travelling to Barcelona to compete in the World Championships.

Frazer is a strong academic. He achieved NCEA level one with an excellence endorsement, while at the same time earning an A in Maths, and A in English, and an A* in Chemistry IGCSE (Cambridge International Education). In 2020, Frazer is on track to pass NCEA level two with an excellence endorsement while also sittting AS level courses in Maths and English. In addition to this, he is also extending himself by sitting scholarship examinations in English, geography, history and chemistry.

In addition to all of these attributes, Frazer shows great initiative and has a positive attitude. During the lockdown period, he conducted a self-initiated inquiry in order to support the teachers and students of St Paul’s Collegiate School. He contacted teachers overseas who had already experienced distance learning, to gain as much knowledge and wisdom as possible. He then collated the information and presented it to the staff, aiding the school as it managed its way through distance learning.

We congratulate Frazer on winning the Altrusa Youth Award for 2020.
