What's cooking this term?

The Year 12s have started this term with an exploration into sustainable food practices. We will be looking at things that we can do in the production, transportation and consumption of food to reduce our food footprint. A big thank you to Frankie Keenan and her whānau for sharing some lovely local produce (plums yum!) with us so that we could bake some plum apple crumble using local produce and grannies traditional recipe.

The Year 13s will be exploring a nutritional issue, focussing on the overconsumption of sugary drinks! Did anyone know that the World Health Organisation recommends having no more than 12 teaspoons of sugar a day. That is around 50g (1 teaspoon = 4g of sugar). On average, this is about half the amount of sugar an adult currently consumes daily! Most of us average around 37 teaspoons of sugar in what we eat and drink.

Our practicals are based around food for flatting and trying to make healthy, cheap student meals and be more conscious about sugar consumption.

If anyone wants to try out a healthier alternative for dessert this weekend, here's the link for what we experimented with in class.
