Day 2: Activities
Dolphin Seeking
The guide took us leisurely downstream for a couple hours to check out the wildlife and end up in some pools where we might be lucky enough to see some Amazon Pink River Dolphins, locally known as Bufeos.
Every stretch of the river was home to all the stunning jungle creatures and plants we were eagerly learning about.
When approaching the dolphin pools we shut off the motor and floated with the gentle current, watching for ripples and listening for the spout of air as the dolphins came up for a breath. We were quickly rewarded with a couple of dolphins surfacing around us.
Of course being the intelligent and cheeky creatures they are they were incredibly good at avoiding the camera and our videos. It seems everytime they surfaced we'd swing around to capture them and they'd be back under. Then they'd suddenly be on the other side of the boat and evading us again.
No matter though, gliding down such a beautifully untouched river with these rare and mysterious creatures was utterly surreal and all we could have wished for.
Magical Sunset
We left the dolphins to their fishing and frolicking and started heading back to the lodge just as the sun was coming down.
Right on 6pm and about halfway back to the lodge we pulled up to a caiman-free stretch of the riverbank and got out for a walk where the jungle was more open so we could see the sunset over the surrounding pampas. No words.
Night Creatures
It gets dark early in the jungle and was already getting very dim as we pulled up for dinner around 7pm.
After dinner we went back out on our boat with torches for some night spotting. The kids had an amazing experience with the shining eyes in the water and trees all around us.
The jungle really came alive with all manner of bird calls, insect chirps, swooping bats and distant monkey grunts.
As we found out in the morning the monkeys wouldn't always be so distant!
