In what ways do governments stop corruption?

In the accompanying webquest we looked at why people are corrupt. In this webquest we look at how governments stop corruption from happening.

Your Challenge:

Your challenge is to find out how governments around the world stop corruption in order to prevent the proper use money for social and economic goals.

Follow this Process:

  1. Watch this video about corruption...

  2. Read this website...
On this site the key things which prevent corruption are stated as:

    1. Freedom of expression

    2. People have a say in the political process

    3. Laws are applied to prevent discrimination and crime

    4. Disputes are solved through good and open political and justice systems

    5. Strong and independent media (newspapers, TV, social media, etc.)

  3. Discuss whether these problems are present in your country?

  4. Summarise and write up on a whiteboard what are the most important government actions to prevent corruption ranked from 1 (most important) to 4 (least important).

  5. Take action: Where does your country rank in the World Corruption Index
    https://www.transparency.org/news/feature/corruption_perceptions_index_2016

  6. Capture and share by discussing with your class what efforts can be made to improve your country’s ranking – it states that no country gets close to a perfect score. How can you contribute personally to that improvement? (Clue: watch the video!)

Educator Notes

To make it more accessible:
Close down access to computers and then lead a quiz to see if you can remember the 4 key steps that governments can take to prevent corruption.

To make it more challenging:
Lead a discussion on the role of the news media in preventing corruption. Does the coming of social media (Facebook, Twitter etc) assist or hinder this?
