What Is Corruption? -APC by A New Nigeria - APC

What is corruption?

What exactly is corruption and why does it threaten peaceful communities and society at large?

Your Challenge:

Describe what corruption is, how it affects businesses, politics and communities. Provide a scenario which exhibits corruption and explain how these three actions will provide peace and minimise the corruption in your given scenario.

Follow this Process:

  1. Watch these first two youtube clips as a class:

    What is Corruption?

  2. Brainstorm in groups of three each choose one of the actions from your challenge to focus on. Start making a mind map of ideas branching from these ideas: What is corruption? Who/what does effect? Then include your own branch for your action.

  3. Go deeper in your group, make a further brainstorm by creating a made up scenario illustrating an example of corruption. Will you choose a corrupt company accepting bribes? A corrupt politician?

  4. Summarise your ideas by drafting a potential news story about your scenario and explain ways in which each of your actions could have prevented this from happening. This news story could be written, a video, a radio interview. Get creative!

  5. Present your news story to the class.

  6. Take action and decide how you start to perceive corrupt companies and people you will see in real life media. Take time to consider what could be done to minimise the impact of future corruption. Who could you reach out to to put these ideas into plans?

  7. Capture and share these outcomes using photo and/or video to inspire others.

Educator Notes

To increase the level of challenge:

Require groups to watch the third video and an extra portion of the assignment is base their news story on the Madoff ponzi scheme. This will showcase their understanding and comprehension of the case.

To simplify:

Focus on basic understanding of what corruption is and create a presentation (video, poster) about who could be corrupt, who would be affected and what the three actions mean in regards to corruption in our society. Exclude the news story segment.
