The United Nations: History and Functions by WatchMojo.com

Why was the United Nations created?

When, why and how did the United Nations come to be? Let’s explore why some of the most powerful countries in the world decided to join together for the sake of upholding world peace.

Follow this Process:

  1. Watch these videos:

    1. The United Nations: History and Functions

    2. A brief history of the United Nations (preview this video before showing children)

    3. Shaping The Future - U.N. Charter Becomes Reality Aka San Francisco Conference (1945)

  2. Create five columns on a mind map with the titles: when, why, who, what, how. In groups of five decide how to address these five titles in regards to the formation of the United Nations. Re-watch the videos and take notes if need be to pick up on details that will help you with this step.

  3. Brainstorm a brief paragraph that summarises the points you have made in the columns. Each member of the group will brainstorm their own summary by individually working on each section.

  4. Summarise your five paragraphs into one document. This document will be the script for a news piece you are to create that aims to look back on the history of the United Nations and provide context about its inception.

  5. Present as if you were a journalist or broadcaster presenting your ideas. This could be through the form of a podcast, video, newspaper article or leaflet.

  6. Take action and decide what values you believe shape the foundations of the United Nations. How are they still relevant decades later? Explain why.

  7. Capture and share your presentation on this site to inspire others.

Educator Notes

To provide further challenge:
Require groups to research more into the preexisting climate of world war two that led to the formation of the United Nations. For historical context, this study must be included in the presentation.

To simplify:
The mindmap of five columns will be teacher directed with everyone contributing as an entire class. Once satisfied with the answers shared and written collaboratively, groups of five will split off to then write the paragraphs and continue the tasks as per usual.
