It is time. Ban nuclear weapons now! by International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons

Why nuclear disarmament would keep peace between countries.

Discover what the term nuclear disarmament means and why it would result in peacekeeping between superpower countries that have the potential to inflict mass destruction.

Follow this Process:

  1. WatchIt is time. Ban nuclear weapons now!”, “Effects of a nuclear bomb” (preview video first) and “Obama presided historic UN Security Council Summit on Nuclear Disarmament

  2. Create a resource of notes taken from the videos you have watched in groups of three. Pick up on key dates, statistics and facts about nuclear weaponry that you believe highlights how dangerous they are.

  3. Brainstorm the ways in which your notes explain what you have learnt about nuclear disarmament. What are the reasons that reflect how enforcing disarmament would consequently enforce peace and justice? Choose 10 key facts, quotes, figures, events or ideas that you believe best justifies nuclear disarmament.

  4. Summarise your ideas into a promotional video that will be played as a campaign video for nuclear disarmament. There are no rules other than to include your ten chosen ideas, get creative about how you will spread your message for peace!

  5. Present the video to your audience, there is no set time limit but it must be at least 2 minutes long.

  6. Take action and decide why you stand behind widespread peace through the elimination of nuclear weapons. Which of your 10 ideas do you identify strongly with? How and who could you promote this to?

  7. Capture and share your presentation on this site to inspire others.

Educator Notes

To provide further challenge:

Require groups to justify their ideas through the points made by Barack Obama in his UN address. They must take note of the terms he uses and include them in their presentation for a comprehensive and advanced approach, similar to that of discussion that would take place in the UN Security council.

To simplify:

Work in a teacher led, collaborative environment to generate the 10 ideas taken from the ideas. Students are not required to gather inspiration on their own, but can have ideas and notions of disarmament explained to them by the teacher that explains the video content. The following video presentation will take place as usual, in groups of five.
