Success at regional Junior Young Farmers competition!

A great day at Kurow, with four Waimate High School teams competing in the regional Junior Young Farmers competition.
Proud placegetters! Sophie and Tate show off their certificates.  by Jo Hunnikin

On Saturday we had four teams compete in the Junior Young Farmers competition held at Kurow Rugby Club. Our teams were: Jayla Davis and Emily Cooney; Zavier Paul and Jacob Zwies; Josh Prattley and Lachie Matthews; Sophie and Tate Hargreaves. All teams had to rotate through seven agriculture-related tasks, from managing flood and fire risks to fencing skills.

There were over 30 teams from all across the region and whilst our teams competed at 8 am we had to wait and see if anyone had made the "top 5".  Sophie and Tate Hargreaves had shown up early on the leader board and managed to secure a spot in the top 5 face-off, answering questions about all things farming. It was a close-run final with Sophie and Tate coming in at third place! Tate also came away with "competitor of the day". They took home some gifts cards and cash from the sponsors. Only the top two teams go through to the national final but Tate and Sophie are next on the list!

Thank you to our parents who came along as support crew. We are so proud of all of our competitors and we look forward to being a regular feature of Junior Young Farmers in the future.
