KiVa: Anti Bullying Programme
West Rolleston Primary School is once again participating in the KiVa Anti Bullying programme and will be a KiVa School in 2024.
Bullying refers to a behaviour that consists of these three things:
- A power imbalance
- An intention to cause harm
- Repetition of the behaviour
At West Rolleston we use the KiVa anti-bullying programme to teach ākonga how to be upstanders and we have a team dedicated to supporting those who require extra guidance in this area.
KiVa is a school wide programme that was developed in Finland and has been a part of various schools in New Zealand since 2014. It is designed to help learners develop skills such as conflict resolution, self management, respect, empathy and inclusion through a series of lessons and follow up activities. It is also interwoven through our Positive Behaviour programme.
Each fortnight learners will be taught a new lesson, relevant to their age to help grow these skills and develop their social wellbeing. To date, learners across the school have covered the following topics:
- Respect is for everyone.
- Communication within a group.
These concepts will also be embedded into all areas of the school day.
Keep an eye out each week for an update on what everyone has been learning about!
