Amesbury School Digest

We have begun our school development planning for next year. We know we are "not there yet" and we need to keep developing and improving what we are doing. Me... I am always quick to jump to what we can do better rather than take a little time to celebrate and savour the good we have achieved. It would be good to stay in that moment for a bit before moving on to consider our ongoing development. Hence, our first question will be about what you particularly like about the school and would like to see continue.

Developing "who you are" as a school is a process that can only take place over time. It is impossible to get everything right from the start, especially when there are no existing templates to tell you what your school should be like. Wouldn't that be easy! (Or perhaps boring). But also, in a rapidly changing world, what worked one year might not be quite right the next year - so change is a constant. This is why your voice is so important. We continually need to know what kind of a school we ALL want for our children and every person's voice contributes to that. This year we have decided to try "Consultation Week" and provide a range of opportunities and ways for you to contribute to the ongoing school strategising and planning. Hopefully you will find a way to contribute that works for you in your busy lives. I look forward to catching up with you at some stage over week 4.

Please check out the Consultation  Week article in this digest and the timetable that is included.

Response to article – “Top schools give multi-million dollar classrooms a fail grade”

by Lesley Murrihy

I don’t normally read the Sunday papers, but when someone told me about the article on the front page of the Sunday Star Times over the weekend, I thought it was time to begin. I found a copy of the article and my Sunday paper reading began. Essentially what I encountered was an argument against being forced to comply with Ministry of Education guidelines to modernise learning spaces because these open spaces “fail” students. The following is my response to the article.
