Curriculum Introduction

Fernside School - February 20, 2019

The present school Board of Trustees and the staff of the school have as their main focus, to “inspire and challenge” children to succeed in a broad and rich school curriculum.

While placing a priority on core curriculum subjects of Literacy and Numeracy, we recognise that this is alone is no guarantee for future success. We deliver on a varied curriculum, encouraging the development of a positive attitude and at the same time recognising and rewarding, effort as well as excellence.

In addition to the core curriculum areas of Mathematics, Reading and Writing we have identified 21 other strands or themes that, as a school community, we feel are important in a balanced school programme.

It is expected that all themes will be covered over a three year period (2018-2020). In most areas there is a strong alignment between our school priorities and the National Curriculum Statement.

Selected Topics are designed to give maximum opportunity for teachers to develop genuinely integrated units of work.

At the start of each term, teachers will notify you in an e-mail, the topics and themes they will covering over the term. In this way we hope to develop a real learning partnership between home and school.

Details of the curriculum can be found on the following pages.
