Learning the 2 and 4 times tables

by Tracey Hopkins

When we first learn our 2 times tables (2 x ?), we learn these as doubles. We learn early on that 2 doubled is 4, 3 doubled is 6, 4 doubled is 8 and so forth.

3 + 3 = (or is the same as) 6 OR

3 doubled is 6 OR

2 x 3 = 6 (two groups of three equals six).

8 + 8 = 16 OR

8 doubled is 16 OR

2 x 8 = 16 (two groups of eight equals sixteen).

When we learn our 4 times tables (4 x ?), we use our knowledge of the 2 times tables to help us. We double the total we got with our 2 times tables to get the answer for our 4 times tables. We double our doubles.

If we know 2 x 3 = 6, then 4 x 3 = 12 because double 6 equals 12.

If we know 2 x 8 = 16, then 4 x 8 = 32 because double 16 equals 32.

Practising

One fun way to practise is to give your child one fact to learn. On one side of a piece of card / paper write the multiplication fact, on the other write the answer (photo below).  Your child puts the piece of card in their pocket and throughout the day at random times you can ask them that fact. They can pull the card out and look at the answer. Quickly they will not need to pull the card out at all - they will have learnt it.

At the end of the video below you can see some fun ways Cara is practising her facts.

Happy multiplying!
