Small School – Big Opportunities

Mary Miller - November 6, 2022

ICT

Each of our classes has an apple TV. Each classroom is is equipped with 15 chromebooks or ipads.

Technology

Each term the year seven and eight children spend a week at the Winton Technology Centre for lessons in cooking, hard materials and textiles.

Sport

All students have opportunities to participate in a wide range of sporting activities in their regular physical education and sporting programmes. Children compete in several zone events including athletics and cross-country and also take part in a variety of sporting tournaments throughout the year.

Camps

We offer yearly class camps for student in Years 3 to 8. The locations vary but include Deep Cove, Stewart Island, Borland, Dunedin and Omaui. Camps provide children with the chance to study places away from their home environment and put into practice the social skills required to make the camps successful. Parental support for our camps is always high, and the experiences have been thoroughly enjoyable.

Enviro School

The Enviroschools programme supports children and young people to plan, design and implement sustainability actions that are important to them and their communities. The aim is to foster a generation of people who instinctively think and act sustainably. Lochiel is very proud of its silver award.

AgriKids

Children from a farming background aged 8 and up have the opportunity to compete in the AgriKids contest, which is held in conjunction with the annual Young Farmer competition. Each year it is held within the Otago/Southland region. In 2015 ‘The Dancing Deer’ team qualified for the national final in Taupo and were placed eighth overall.

Leadership

There are many different leadership opportunities at Lochiel. House captains lead the students in the school’s four houses and are responsible for organising different events throughout the year. Four students are selected to attend the Halogen Young Leaders day in Dunedin each year and one is awarded the Westpac Leadership Award. We also have Sports Monitors, Milk Monitors, Bus Monitors, PALS, School Council, IT Monitors, and Librarians. Our Enviro Heroes lead the school in promoting sustainability.
