Kia ora koutou katoa. Having just read Dr Judith Locke’s book, The Bonsai Child, I am reminded how raising our children is complicated. She talks about how much praise is too much, what the best responses are when things don’t go right for them, and how we can unknowingly limit our child’s potential. It is a great read and I do recommend it.

On Thursday May 27th, our badminton teams participated in the North Harbour Primary School Team Challenge event. It was an immensely successful day with over 20 teams taking part. The students did Milford School really proud, showing excellent sportsmanship and giving their best. In the end, our team competing in Section 1 came 3rd overall and our Section 2 team came first! They played fantastically and should be very proud of themselves.

Continuing with their Wonder Projects, Year 5 students test launched their rockets this week with the help of their engineering ambassadors.

Room 20 ESOL students have shared their amazing learning with Mrs. Cattell. Their Unit of Inquiry is SHARING THE PLANET. We are very proud of our knowledgeable students, who work really hard to build up their vocabulary and understanding of the current unit and the central idea. Fantastic learning!

Music is a great subject for the students because we can often reinforce learning that is done in class in a creative way. Below are some videos of the children in action. The first clip shows the children playing a hand game called Double Double.

Since Term One, a team of Year 6 students have been participating in the The Tread Lightly Charitable Trust program, Stormwater Sleuths, proudly supported by Auckland Council, SouthSci Comet and Curious Minds.

Victoria in Year 3 has shown that she is a great Communicator and a Thinker, as she works to take action on pollution in our oceans. Victoria designed and made this amazing poster, explaining the reason pollution in the ocean is bad, and suggests three actions for ensuring the oceans become rubbish-free. You can pick up and dispose of your rubbish sensibly, you can recycle items so they can be used again, and you can donate items so they can be of use to someone else! Amazing thinking Victoria, you have shown that when a person feels passionately about an issue, they can take ACTION, no matter what age they are.

Mrs Cattell, Mrs Hewitt and I were blown away with the talent and friendship shown by McKenzie and Amelia who wrote a song recently about their friendship. They very kindly sang it to us and we loved it! It shows that they are Caring, Communicators, Risk-takers and Reflective, from the Learner Profile. We are so proud of this talented and creative friendship team!

ICAS is designed to target students’ higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills in English, Mathematics, Science, Writing, Spelling Bee, and Digital Technologies. Every student will receive a printed certificate and an online results report. Top performers will be eligible for medals and are invited to attend special award ceremonies to have their academic excellence publicly recognised.

This year we are excited to be working towards two wonderful school productions. Year 1-3 children will be performing 'The Bee Musical' while Year 4-6 children will be performing 'Sucked In'.

Catalogues were sent home this week, BUT if you didn’t get one don’t despair. Please check with your classroom teacher or the office to get your copy. Orders need to be placed by 12pm Friday 18 June.

‘Give a Kid a Blanket’ is a community action of kindness where donations of warm bedding and pajamas are given to families and kids in need from across the wider Auckland area and beyond. Collection Week will be: Monday - Friday, 14 - 18 June 2021 Students can bring items directly to room 4.

M Sports are coming back to hold fun Football Kidz clinics at the school with our new inflatable pitch. Girls and boys from years 0-6 are welcome to participate.

On Tuesday 29 June members of our Orchestral group and our Year 5/6 Festival Choir will perform at the Pupuke Kahui Ako Music Gala at Westlake Boys High School. Please put this date in your diaries. Further information will be available in the coming weeks.
