Principal’s Message

by Sue Cattell

Kia ora koutou katoa. Today’s newsletter comes to you as we await the update on the Covid-19 current situation. While these are uncertain times, I do encourage you to be calm and positive, especially around your children. As soon as we know how schools will operate from Monday, I will be updating you all. The Secretary of Education, Iona Holsted, has been emailing Principals over the past few days with possible scenarios and I do want to assure you that we are prepared for any of these options. If distance learning is required, our teachers have met and discussed what this will be. Our zoom skills have kicked in once again!

Berry Busy in the Garden

by Ellen von Collas and Jillian Sommers

Last week in Gardening Club we planted swan plants near the Hive and prepared tile labels with the name and a drawing of the plant for our veggie gardens. We also added special strawberry compost to our strawberry garden and tucked straw all around the plants so that the berries don't rot as they won't be lying directly on the soil. We are hoping to get a really good strawberry harvest in term 4. Other winter vegetables are coming on nicely and we are hoping to have some tasters in the next few weeks.

Ground-breaking Dig

by by Enviro Group

Last Friday was a ground-breaking day for the Enviro Group. It was our first dig at the grassy hill that leads from behind the hall, down to lake Pupuke. The steep incline that has proved treacherous to mow, is slowly being returned to nature as we create our native Mārā Koru, or Koru Garden. The ground was a lot harder than we expected, sodden with recent rains. Our lightweight bodies had little impact on our spades as we chipped away at it like dogs trying to get at a buried bone. Digging was frequently interrupted to rescue earthworms of varying lengths from being dissected.
