Reading
It was a short week for reading this week but an important one, because next week is Running Record week, when we will be conducting reading checks on every student in the hub. As a result of this, you may see a few more browsing box books coming home than usual. Now is also a brilliant time to touch base with your child's reading teacher to see how they are progressing!
Writing
Mr Morehu's class made lemon volcanos as their science experiment hook this week, while Ms O'Loughlin made a volcano like eruption when she had a go at Mr Morehu's elephant toothpaste experiment. Mr Horn's class made two different kinds of slime, Oobleck, which was great for demonstrating the difference between a solid and a liquid and what happens to molecules in a solid and a liquid. We also tried making fluffy slime, unfortunately we didn't have any hand lotion so the fluffy slime ended up a bit rubbery!
Maths
Well done to Adele, Marco, and Tiffiny for winning the Maths Whizz certificates this week.
Some of the new learning in Mr Horn's maths this week was about division knowledge and multiplication strategies. We learned how to divide numbers using materials (ie. 24 divided into 6 is 4 because 24 cubes made into groups of 6 is 4 groups). We also learned how to do a times tables grid to practice our times tables. The multiplication strategy we learned was for when multiplying be 12 or higher. The strategy is similar to place value times, If the question was 7x15, first you would times 7 by 10, which we know is 70, then times 7 by 5, which we know is 35. Then add the two together to get 105.
Topic
While still learning about how chemicals mix together to cause different reactions, Mr Morehu and Ms O'Loughlin used various chemicals to first write in invisible ink, then reveal the ink using an acidic liquid (lime, lemon, orange juice, etc).
Meanwhile after one of our wonderings sessions, Mr Horn's class spent the week learning about gravity, moons, solar orbits, and various other things about space and our solar system.
What's Coming Up?
- Mr Horn is on ICT release on Tuesday
- Ms O'Loughlin is on Leadership release on Thursday
- It's rubbish free lunch box week, we will be having spot inspections from some senior students throughout the week looking for rubbish free lunch boxes
