Alex HORN

A catch up on the happenings of the seventh week of term 1.

Scooters and Bikes

Please remember to walk your scooter or bike when you are on school grounds. This way we can keep others safe, particularly any little children here with big brothers or sisters.

Writing

Our Writing Hooks this week have been:

Miss O'Loughlin: Gingerbread Men

Mr Morehu: What's My Goal?

Mr Horn: How Heat Causes Change - Popcorn

In the back of each or our writing books we have a set of goals that we are working on in our guided writing sessions. We have to show the goal in our writing three times to pass the goal and get a new one. Some of the goals are: Use finger spaces between words, use question marks, exclamation marks and commas, use describing words, use emotion words.

We also have highlighter strips with each piece of guided writing which we use to self assess our writing for surface features such as capitals, full stops, spaces.

Reading

Our readings groups have been doing a lot of challenging books lately. Nearly every reading group has moved up a level.

Keep an eye out next week because the Piwakawaka group have been learning about non-fiction texts and will be creating information reports in the coming week.

Maths

Here are some of the awesome things we have been learning about in maths:

Place Value Addition and Subtraction: First we had to learn about Place Value, we did this by learning about the Place Value house, a made up house where all the number families live next door to each other. The ones live next to the tens, who live next to the hundreds, who live next to the thousands, etc. Then we learned how to use this to make large three digit adds and subs easier by first adding/subtracting the ones from each other, then the tens, then the hundreds.

Sequencing Fractions: "The bigger the number, the smaller the fraction" this has been our catch phrase for learning to sequence fractions. 1/10 is a smaller fraction than 1/4 because 10 is larger than 4, so 10 slices of a pizza means smaller slices than 4 slices of a pizza would be.

Life Education

We loved visiting Harold in the Life Education classroom this week. We have been learning about the brain, how it learns and controls our body and how it is important to keep our brains safe.

The Arts

In pencil art with Mr Morehu we have been learning about sketching techniques such as cross hatching.

In paint art with Mr Horn we have been learning about the colour wheel, primary colours, secondary colours, and shades.

In drama with Miss O'Loughlin we have been recreating the story "We're Going on a Bear Hunt"

Mrs Garner

Welcome to Mrs Garner who started in the Hub this week, working with Mr Horn, 2AH and Mr Horn's reading, writing, and maths groups.

Union Meetings

On Tuesday afternoon Mr Horn will be going to a Union Meeting, Miss O'Loughlin will be going to the same meeting on Wednesday afternoon. School will remain open, the class programme will however be slightly adjusted. On Tuesday we go swimming, so Miss Garner and Mr Morehu will take the swimmers to the pool, while Miss O'Loughlin stays behind with those not swimming. On Wednesday Mr Horn, Miss Garner and Mr Morehu will be running a super special maths lesson with the whole Hub.
