Elshke Chadinha - March 18, 2019
This week Miss Chadinha's and Mr Horn's writing class engaged in our emotional hook on Monday. We made butter from scratch, and then enjoyed it on a slice of bread.
We started off my putting all the materials and ingredients in front of the students. They had to PREDICT what we were going to do. Some ideas were:
1. We are going to mix the cream and bread in the jar, take it out and cut it up to eat.
2. We are going to mix the cream in the jar then put it on a slice of bread and eat it.
Now, they weren't completely off track.
We then proceeded to pour the cream in the jar and gave each student 15 seconds to shake the jar. After all the students did this (with the help from the teachers as well) we ended up with butter!!!! There was some milk left behind which is called butter milk. Mr Horn demonstrated that we can drink it ;) or use it in some cooking/baking so we don't waste it.
The students were amazed that from cream and by merely shaking it, it can turn into butter.
Each student enjoyed a piece of bread and butter and we got them to think about what it smelt, looked and tasted like.
What did the butter look like?
- Whipped butter
- Yellow
- Scrambled eggs
What does it smell like?
- Just like butter
- Creamy
- A flower
What does is taste like?
- Sweet
- Popcorn
- Delicious!
Why not try and make some home made butter yourself?
