Alex HORN

What did we get up to this week?

Goodbye Nakita

Nakita is off to Indonesia until August. We look forward to hearing all about her adventures when she gets back!

Reading

This week Mr Horn's Piwakawaka group started an information report. They read a non-fiction book and had to find some facts in it and record them on an Explain Everything. Then they had to use the iPads and the internet to research their subject and find more facts.

Miss O'Loughlin's Kakapo and Morepork group have been making their stories more interesting by using expression. They will have to use their voices to match the tone, so if a character is whispering they will need to whisper, or if they have an exclamation mark they may be angry or surprised.

Mr Morehu's Pouakai group have been using his special inference cards to develop their inferencing skills. Which is all about finding out about the meaning of a story or sentence when the answer is not written or shown in the picture.

Writing

In Writing, Mr Horn's hook this week was scones. We made the mix in class, then Mrs Garner took some children down to the office to use the oven. We got to eat the scones with whipped cream at read and feed time.

Mr Morehu's writing class have been imagining themselves as superheroes and using descriptive language to describe their costumes and their powers.

Miss O'Loughlin's group have been focusing on their personal goals, choosing their own writing subject so long as it will allow them to practice their goal.

Maths

Miss O'Loughlin's maths class have been working on adding numbers to 20 and counting forwards and backwards in that range.

Mr Morehu's maths class have been working on using their skip counting and basic facts to solve questions.

Mr Horn's maths class have been learning about flipping questions from the biggest number to the smallest to solve complicated additions.

The Arts

With Mr Horn's class have finished their colour wheels and have started creating Elma Elephants based on the story "Elma the Elephant". Today we painted the primary colours onto our pictures.

With Miss O'Loughlin 2JO have been practicing their Bear Hunt performance.

Mr Morehu's sketching class have been practicing drawing eyes and noses.
